Facebook Offers Your Name URLs at Midnight Tonight

You will be able to get your name as the URL to your Facebook profile tonight at midnight EST

To match Google Friend Connect custom URLs Facebook will offer text URLs to your profile tonight at 12 midnight EST so get yours now (tonight).

Log into Facebook, go to this URL then watch the time count down. To get yours before someone else does, on the page there, as the time counts down keep pressing F5 on your keyboard, this will refresh the browser and get you in. The page may redirect on it’s own and it says it does. If it does not, then use the F5 refresh tactic if it times out and will not display.

The page will give you a time zone translation and display a count down script to your time. If you live on the west coast you won’t have to stay up so late, it will convert the time difference and you can gain access at 9:00 PM PST.

Believe me millions are going to be pounding away on this like crazy, expect network timeouts, server crashes and let’s hope Facebook’s servers can stand up to the load.

More on the Facebook blog here.

Get yours tonight or hate yourself later.

Tell your friends, tell your Dad, tell your Mom….

When you get your name, come back here and post it in the comments. I want to see how you all did and of course we can all make a few more friends this way too. – Cheers!

Good Luck!

Chris Lang

A number of people have asked me today if they should go after their name or business name. You want your name, not your business. Business names do not do well on social marketing sites.

When you share something thru social sites, Facebook Connect or Tweet something I just cringe when I see a business name, don’t do that. IF someone uses your business name, I would take it up with Facebook or Twitter or whatever site it is on. Twitter is going to offer verified name services later this summer, or so they say.

I own my business name and it is registered as a Domain, with the IRS as a business name and with my state as well.

Same way with Google Friend Connect, DO NOT use your business name, sure I would grab the Gmail address, but no one cares about your business. You are not going to brand anything. You are just going to run off prospects that could have been captured and become good social contacts when you use business names in social marketing circles.

Hope that makes sense, if not do what you believe does, I can only offer advice from years of experience. In the end do what you believe is best for your business. Good Luck with Facebook tonight!

Thanks for the advice. I had been wondering whether to put my own personal name or not. I have now signed up as facebook.comjennykotulak. I was afraid if I had used something else, eg: Oakville real estate, that my friends would not find me.
